Health Champion Projects

If you are interested in getting involved with any of these projects, contact Chris or Tanyat at Shipshape on 0114 2500222.

Project 1 - Action for housing healthy eating program.

Number of health champions – 1 or 2.

Outline:

You will work along side Chris to deliver a 12 week course on healthy eating to service users of action for housing. The course will be delivered in Broomhall with the first two sessions at Action for housing and the following 10 at the Broomsprings centre. The first two sessions will look at the theory side of healthy eating with the other 10 being practical cooking sessions.

You will gain experience of working with vulnerable adults with a range of needs and the skills of how to deliver a healthy eating program.

Project 2 – Lowfield and Sharrow Primary Schools cook and eat programs

Number of health champions - 3 or 4.

Outline:

You will work on delivering a 6 week healthy eating program in 2 local primary schools. The program will be delivered to parents with children at the schools in the parent kitchens at the schools. You will work with between 5 and 10 parents, providing them with information around healthy eating and carrying out cook and eat sessions. The program aims to teach people the basics of cooking along with techniques to reduce the amount of salt, fat and sugar that people use.

Project 3 – Sharrow winter market / healthy eating event

Number of health champions – 4 to 6.

Outline:

To run along side the Sharrow winter market, you will come up with an idea for an event that can run along side the market to promote the work that Shipshape does. The event should promote healthy eating, be fun and accessible to all.

You will be responsible for planning and running the event (with help from Shipshape staff). This will include advertising, applying for funding, co-ordinating and running the event on the day. The winter market is taking place on Sunday 12th of December.

Project 4 – Sure Start dad’s and children’s cooking session

Number of health champions – 2 to 3.

Outline:

You will build on the existing work that is taking place with Sharrow Sure Start’s dad’s and children’s group to provide health information and support to the group, along with a cooking session for the older children and their dad’s. The sessions take place monthly on a Saturday morning between 10 and 1. You will work alongside staff from the Sure Start centre with an average of 15 to 20 dad’s and 30 children at each session.
