Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) is a new NHS service at Shipshape to help adults with depression (low mood) and/or anxiety (worry, stress, panic and phobia). One-to-one, short-term help is offered for people to understand their difficulties and develop ways to cope better. These include reading through information, using self-help materials such as books/CDs, learning relaxation techniques or being referred to other agencies such as advice centres or the Jobcentre. Additional IAPT services available include stress control courses, healthy living workshops and computerised therapy. IAPT is not counselling or psychotherapy. It is not suitable for people who are suicidal, have severe mental illnesses or those already involved with mental health services or counselling.
The IAPT worker at Shipshape is Rachel Strange and suitable clients would be able to see her on a Wednesday by appointment only. Please phone Shipshape on 0114 2500222 or call in to make an enquiry/referral. Examples of IAPT clients:Imran, 31, thought he was stressed from his job but had actually been very depressed for 2 years. He felt unable to say this within his own community and used depression workbooks to cope better in his daily life. Susan, 22, lost confidence in social situations and started having panic attacks on public transport. IAPT helped her to make a plan to overcome her fears and learn to relax. She is now happier and able to uses buses and trams again. Maryam, 46, was feeling miserable and too tired to look after her husband, children or the home. With an independent professional Urdu interpreter, IAPT support enabled her to set realistic goals for activity each day, which helped improve her mood and energy levels.
